Here's a few quick updates and reminders about what is coming up at Harvest Church...

This Sunday is the launch of our 9am and 11am services. There will be full Waumba Land and UpStreet programming at both services!

If you have been waiting to get involved, now is the time. We have a number of opportunities to serve on our 11am Guest Services Teams. So sign up now!

This Sunday, January 8th, we are also starting a brand new series called Big Church. This is gonna be a fantastic series and an excellent opportunity to invite somebody to join you. This first week is especially gonna be great for a guest so take advantage of the New Year, be bold and invite that person you've been praying for to join you this Sunday. You will both be glad you did!

Oh ya, don't be late, we have a great opener to begin the service!!!

Cyber Monday

Just wanted to touch base with you on “Cyber Monday!” A lot of people are shopping online today looking for a great deal. I wanted to send you a quick note about what I think is the best deal.

Cyber Monday has become the biggest online shopping day of the year. That isn’t bad but it isn’t lasting. Our church exists to reach people that do not know Jesus and that IS lasting!

While you are shopping online, why not go here and invest in life change. I believe that this investment is eternal as well as good for you.

As you shop, let’s remember to honor God with our finances this year end! This is our cyber monday deal: 100% of your investment will go to reaching people for Jesus.

In fact, I had a conversation yesterday with a gal who has attended for three weeks and she told me that her life is already better!!! The environments you help create are truly leading people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ!

November Update

Thanksgiving is about a week away... I can't wait. I love turkey and pie! Before we all eat ourselves into a food coma, I wanted to share a couple of quick updates with you.

Be Rich - We are collecting hats and gloves for local elementary school students as well as collecting food and monetary donations for our local YWCA. Please deliver donations to the church lobby on or before December 11th. To make a donation online click here and be sure to select "missions" from the drop down menu.

Samaritans Purse - Thank you to all of you who picked up a shoebox! You are making Christmas a reality for a child while at the same time communicating how much Jesus loves them! This Sunday, November 20th is the deadline to return your packed shoebox! For more information about Be Rich or Samaritans Purse click here.

Game Plan - This has been a phenomenal series and we are hearing lots of great feedback! If you have missed any of the messages you can get caught up here. You can also take the Game Plan gift assessment to help determine God's thumbprint on your life! Let us know if you're ready to take a step and join a team here at Harvest, we are always looking for more great volunteers to make Harvest Church a great place to be on a Sunday!

There are over 42,000 people living in our community who are not engaged in a church.

In the next twelve months we want people to thrive and the mission of Harvest to thrive like never before. I want to invite you to play a vital role in making it happen.

Why Thrive?
Because thriving is so much better than just surviving. Too many of us live on the edge financially.

As a result, money can feel more like an obstacle than an opportunity, adding stress to life and resulting in many missed opportunities.

What if that changed? What if in the next twelve months you could begin to live with margin and began to live on mission?

What if every person and every family started living with margin and:

Had money left over at the end of the month?

Could take a family vacation?

Began to give first, save second, and live on the rest?

Started to thrive?

What if every person and every family started living on mission and we:

Like it or not Summer is over and school is starting. My oldest son Noah said this week on the way out the door to his first day of 2nd grade, "I'm so excited to get back to my REAL life!" Which was quickly followed by "I'm so excited to start my NEW life" from younger brother Zachery who was about to begin his first kindergarten experience.

Just like at my house, Fall brings a bit of excitement to all of us as we slide back to our normal routines or begin a new chapter with kids, school, work, or even just the seasons as they change. Here at Harvest Church is no exception.

We just finished up an amazing series about how we spend our lives called Time of Your Life. If you missed one, want to see it again, or just want to share it with a friend you can visit our messages page. Andy challenged all of us to live as if our days were numbered and live with purpose. With that in mind, Fall is a great time get involved at Harvest Church! Here's what's coming up:

May 1st - June 5th at Harvest Church

[Guardrails: a system designed to keep vehicles from straying into dangerous or off-limit areas.]
Ever wonder what it would be like to have guardrails in other areas of your life, areas where culture baits you to the edge of disaster and then chastises you when you step across the line? Your friendships. Your finances. Your marriage.

Maybe your greatest regret could have been avoided if you had established guardrails. Don't miss this new series beginning this Sunday. Guardrails will be a great series to invite those you've invested in to join you at Harvest Church!

What is an Access Group? Access Groups are
6-8 week small group experiences that focus on a particular topic or study.

When do they meet? Our next Access Group will meet on Sundays after the 9:30 am service beginning Sunday, May 15th. The group will meet for approximately one hour and childcare will be provided.

What topic will we study? We will be exploring the topic of spiritual growth. We will be discussing what it means to grow, measuring spiritual growth, and what it looks like to pursue a personal relationship with God.

April 3rd... The biggest day of the year!

I hope you have been enjoying our beautiful spring weather as much as I have! Actually, I've enjoyed it too much. Last Saturday while playing outside with my boys, I dislocated a bone in my foot, so I'll take all the prayers you can spare for a speedy recovery!

Speaking of prayers, I hope that you have been able to pray for the people you would like to invite with you to the kickoff of White Flag, Sunday April 3rd. This is gonna be a great day at Harvest Church and you and your friends and family will not want to miss it. Word on the street is that the first song alone will be worth getting out of bed for so don't be late!

I would like to say thank you to all of you who have taken a step to automate the important and signed up for online giving! The idea of automating the important is so simple yet so profound for many areas of our lives and I hope you will apply it in more than one arena. Read a bit more about my story here.

Thank you for making Harvest Church an amazing place to be on a Sunday. Together, we are making a difference in our community!

Why I Give Online to Harvest Church

In addition to being the lead pastor of Harvest Church, I’m also a financially contributing member. I give at least 10% of my pre-tax income to this church, and I wanted to share some of the reasons why.

First, I believe in the mission of this church. I’m proud to be a part of a church that cares about reaching people far from God. I’m proud to be a part of a place that is truly affecting life change as we lead people into a growing relationship with Christ.

Every time I hear a story about a family put back together or a teenager who decides to follow Christ or a man who finally gets back in church, I know that my contributions played a small part in that. People’s lives are being changed and this church is a part of that. Jesus said that our treasure would follow our heart, so because my heart is with this church, I want to financially support it.

Secondly, I want to be an example to my children. I’m so tired of hearing people complain about the younger generation…they are just following our example! I don’t want selfish children, caring only about their iPods, clothes, cars, and friends. I want my kids to care about other people. That’s not gonna happen by accident…I have to be intentional about modeling that. I cannot tell them to care about others and then spend 100% of my paycheck on our own needs and wants. Parents, we’ve got to be responsible for teaching our kids to be generous, and we can’t do that if we are not generous ourselves.

Thirdly, I give because God commands me to give. In the Old Testament, God commanded his people to tithe, and obedience wasn’t an option. In the New Testament, Jesus talks a lot about giving and money. Paul writes about money. He tells Christians this: “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Every month, we automatically give to our church because that honors God. We want to honor God, even when it’s difficult, even when things are tight. There have been times that we’ve gone without something, but we never cancel the contribution to the church. I’d rob the mortgage company before I robbed God.

I do all of this online. I set up a profile on our website and chose to make my monthly contribution automatic. It’s convenient, and it keeps me from forgetting to do what’s really important to me.

I want to encourage you to automate the important by setting up your online giving profile today.

Opportunity & Courage
As we completed the Practical Atheist series a couple of weeks ago, I left you with the challenge to pray that God would give you the opportunity and courage to invite 5 people with you to Harvest Church Sunday, April 3rd.

We are three weeks into our series Practical Atheist. I know that this series has been challenging and I hope that it has been helpful to look at what we believe, why we believe it, and what it means to call ourselves Christians.

Quite a few of you missed last week due to the holiday or sports or you heard I was gonna talk about money. If you missed for whatever reason, please take time to listen online or get the cd on Sunday at Guest Services.

I would really love to hear any and all feedback, so please, tell me what you thought of the message and or series. What are you wrestling with? How have you been challenged? What steps are you going to take in response to this series?

I hope you are all having a great Christmas season. I wanted to take one last opportunity to invite you to join us for our Christmas Eve Candlelight service, 4pm on December 24th. We have a wonderful hour of Christmas planned for you and your family!

Please remember that there is no church service Sunday, December 26th. Sleep in and enjoy the holiday weekend with your loved ones. Thank you to all our amazing volunteers who work so hard all year long!!!

Business note: The Christmas Eve service will be the last opportunity to make tax-deductible donations for tax year 2010 in a service. As part of Be Rich, Harvest Church is joining with local and international partners "to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share." Here are some ways that anyone who attends Harvest can participate by giving globally, giving locally, or serving locally.

For local serving or local giving opportunities, we are collecting hats and gloves for local elementary school students as well as collecting food and monetary donations for our local YWCA. Big Day

This Sunday, September 19th is our Big Day! We are kicking off a brand new series called Losing Your Religion. We have been talking about this series for a few weeks now and I am ready for a great Sunday and hope you are as well. I hope that you have been praying for and inviting your friends, family, and co-workers to join you this week at Harvest. I believe God will use our Ignite series that we just completed along with Losing Your Religion to make a significant impact in our community!

Refuge is doing a FREE Car Wash!!!
That's right you read it right...FREE Carwash! Here's the deal:

Our Jr. & Sr. High students are raising money for summer camp a.k.a. Collide 2010.

Each student is collecting pledges per car washed, so the more cars they wash, the more money they each make to put towards camp! All you have to do is bring your car to get washed FREE! Then go home and get your other car, then get your neighbors cars...Tell everybody you know about our FREE Car Wash happening this Saturday!

Staying In Love
We have heard nothing but great things coming out of our series "Staying In Love" and many of you have asked about purchasing the DVD of the series. DVD's can be ordered here for $25. We will place one order next Wednesday, June 23rd. DVD's will then be able to be picked up Sunday July 4th. Letdown
The last two weeks we talked about Letdown and how to deal with disappointment relationally and how to react when it appears we are being or have been let down by God. I want to remind you to adopt the two simple prayers that I offered the first week. The first is "God help me to live with thicker skin" and the second was "God help me to love with a softer heart." By adopting these two simple prayers, we can avoid the dangers of letdown and disappointment. As I was reading in Philippians this week, I read chapter 4:4-13 and thought that it complimented the thoughts and concepts that we talked about during this last series. I was encouraged and I bet you will be as well!

Father's Day 2010!!!
Alright husbands, fathers, boyfriends, and sons, this Sunday is for you. Our culture is big on men understanding the complexities of women, but what about women understanding men? Don't miss this Sunday, Father's Day 2010 as we we learn the truth about the inner lives of men that they desperately want women to know. WARNING: We will be addressing issues that may not be suitable or appropriate for children. Mike and Charity Goodell, our beloved and talented worship leaders will be leaving us at the end of July. After much prayer and thought, they are going to be taking their talents back to their roots at C.O.C. (Community On Call) where they first encountered the love and acceptance of Jesus. We have been incredibly blessed and are thankful for the time they've been at Harvest. Although we are sad to see them go, we are excited for what God has done and will continue to do in and through them personally and as musicians. At this time, they are planning to make the transition at the end of July. Now more than ever, we are on the lookout for talented musicians and singers to fill the ranks of our band. Here comes Summer...and that means Lunch on the Lawn at Harvest Church! The first Sunday of the month (June-Sept) bring your lawn chairs and sunscreen and join us for some amazing burgers!

We have redone our "Messages" page on our website and are now able to offer free podcasting of our Sunday messages. Can you believe that Easter is already less than a week away? We are having a great Spring at Harvest Church and are really excited about the rest of the year! Many of you have decided to take a step in one or more of the 4 Things and I want to congratulate you. I know that the economics of life are difficult, however, those of you who have chosen to be generous with your time, talents, and resources are leveraging what God has given in a way that is truly life changing!

Some of you have significantly increased your giving percentage or even started giving on a percentage basis. Thank you! Others have decided to get involved with Strategic Service and are in process of joining a team. Thank you! Still others, have resolved to get into a small group! Thank you! You are what make Harvest Church successful, and together, we can affect change in our community.

I am consistently hearing stories of life change through what God is doing through all of us at Harvest Church. In fact, I just heard of a young couple who invited some friends to Harvest. They were excited because in their previous religious experience they wouldn't have even considered the idea of inviting a friend. Invite a friend, why would I do that? I love that we have been able to create an environment where people are comfortable to invite their friends! Awesome!

I mentioned our awesome interns a couple of weeks ago in my service welcome. We have 4 incredible interns who are an amazing part of what happens at Harvest Church! Two of them (Corey and Travis) are moving into a house on church property and are in need of a refrigerator. If you've got an extra fridge laying around the house, let us know and we will be happy to come and get it! Our intern program is called Epic Ventures and I will be sharing more about it and them later! If you don't want to wait, you can find out a little more here.

Video, Balanced, Easter...Spring is here!

Can you believe how fast Spring has come?
We have some great things happening here at Harvest Church and I just wanted to share a couple of them.

First, we have and are still hearing incredible stories of how our series "Balanced" has made significant impact in many lives. Even more amazing is that many of these stories have very little to do with money and much more to do with spiritual balance and health! If you missed any of the weeks during this series, I strongly encourage you to watch online at www.balancedonline.org. You will also find the resources mentioned during the series. If you would like to accelerate your financial journey we will be offering Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University this Spring. Please watch for more details coming soon.

There are also some very practical financial tools online. Two of the
best can be found at www.mint.com and www.mvelopes.com. I just
discovered the mvelopes site and I am really loving what it is doing for my personal finances! Mint is free but somewhat limited, and Mvelopes is a paid subscription with more features.

I will be speaking live this Sunday, March 7th. Don't miss it! We will be looking under the hood of Harvest Church and I'm excited to talk about the 4 Things. What are the 4 Things you ask?... You're just going to have to wait 'till Sunday!

March 14th will be the start of the series that will conclude on Easter called "Playing God," It will be an excellent time to practice the "Invite" part of Invest and Invite!

For those of you who may be wondering why we have done so much video so far this year, here is an answer. We are still learning how best to utilize and leverage the video content. We truly want your honest feedback and thoughts and wanted to give a concentrated dose of video content hoping to gain a pulse of its effectiveness and relevance to our audience. We felt like Andy could better communicate the things that I wanted to share with you the first part of the year leading up to Easter.

The majority of the comments we hear are overwhelmingly positive concerning video messages.
However, we also know that some of you still aren't quite sure about a preacher on a screen.
Rest assured I will still be doing 50% of the speaking for the year. So after Easter you're gonna be stuck, or blessed (however you see it!) with me for a while! So please don't hesitate to share your thoughts about what we are doing as we strive to create a church for people who don't like church. After all, if an un-churched person can't or wont come to church to encounter God in a relaxed and relevant environment, where else can they go?

World Vision: Haiti Earthquake Relief

By now I'm sure you've all heard about the earthquake that has devastated Haiti this week. Please pray for the health, welfare, and safety for everybody involved and affected.

We will be taking an additional offering this Sunday at the end of service to support World Vision's relief efforts. Michelle and I have been a World Vision sponsor for Kervins, a 6 year old Haitian boy for a number of years now. His life and world have been tremendously impacted by these events. We have received word that no World Vision sponsorship communities have been seriously affected and that all the sponsored children appear to be safe.

However, the struggle is just beginning. Please consider making a donation online to World Vision at the link below, or plan to donate this week at Harvest.

Hello Summer!
I trust the sunshine and summer fun are treating you well as we are already well into July! Before you know it the kids will be back in school, but let's not talk about that just yet. Rather, I want to take a quick opportunity to let you in on what's going on around Harvest and what the fall is going to look like. So grab a cup of coffee and read on!

As you know our mission statement is to "Lead people into a healthy relationship with Jesus Christ. We do this by creating irresistible environments where people are encouraged and equipped to pursue intimacy with God, community with insiders and influence with outsiders. We call these our three vital relationships because we believe that spiritual maturity can be measured by one's pursuit of these three areas. With that in mind we are continuing our emphasis on small groups for every age.

Small Groups for Adults
We know that getting plugged into a group is not always easy. In fact it can be quite difficult to find that "great fit" with those people who you really can "do life" with. So don't give up, it is worth it. This fall we will be forming new groups and you can get more details about that at the information center.

We are also launching a small group environment for adults on Sunday mornings called Starting Point. Starting Point is for: returners—people who have returned to church after a long absence, seekers--people investigating faith, and starters—people just beginning their Christian journey. Again more details about Starting Point are at the information center.

Small Groups Emphasis for Kids
We are launching a small group emphasis in Adventure Ave, the K-5th grade group. Along with small groups, we have some amazing things coming this fall for these guys and can't wait to share it with you. Your children will love attending kids church even more as we launch additional components of our existing curriculum. Be on the look out for our very own "Upstreet Theater!" Make sure your kids are at church Sunday, July 26th as we will be putting on an Upstreet preview so that kids and teachers can see what will be coming this Fall.

Amy Powell will be jumping in to fill our Family Ministry Director role, overseeing Nursery-5th Grade freeing up more time for Nyla Clare as she continue as the full time director of Littleseeds Learning Center.

Small Group Emphasis for Teens
Refuge will continue to meet for both Junior and Senior high. Andrew and Amy Powell, will continue their involvement with our amazing group of senior high school students and Pat and Lenea Holman will assume responsibility for our awesome group of junior high students. Both of these groups will also be focusing on small group relationships throughout this next year.

Launching a Second Service
One of the most exciting things in the works is the launch of our second service! Sunday, September 13th will mark the beginning of our 11:00 am service. The main reason for the additional service is that a second service will allow or Strategic Service Teams the ability to serve in a ministry environment and attend a worship service. We are so thankful for the work our amazing volunteers do every week. We could not exist with out you!

Finally, as Harvest grows we also continue to evolve and change. As many of you already know, my brother, Joshua Clare will be going west in August to assume the worship leader position at New Life Center in Everett, WA. We are excited for Josh and Heidie as they pursue God's direction for their future. We are also excited for what is happening right here with our incredibly talented band. Mike and Charity Goodell will be taking on more responsibility and leadership to ensure our Sunday's still Rock!

The staff and I are extremely excited for this next year as Harvest continues to become a church that unchurched people love to attend. We are still working on the final details of a partner relationship with North Point Community Church (Andy Stanley) . As that partnership progresses, the only change you will experience is that we get better! They are a phenomenal organization that is having tremendous impact throughout the world and I am completely honored to be in a position to work with them.

Ok, here goes, my first blog post...and maybe my last.

Harvest Church...Leading people into healthy relationships with Jesus Christ. Nice catchy mission statement isn't it? But what's the point of a mission statement if it is just something buried on the website or in some brochure? Every church has a mission statement, one that was undoubtedly pounded out with much prayer, sweat, and plagiarism. But how many churches or organizations for that matter, really live by their mission statement? Is it something that is allowed to shape and define the organization? Is it protected at all costs? Are good programs and ideas cut because they don't further the mission? If not, then the mission statement is worthless.

That's why we've adopted a strategy (thank you www.northpoint.org) that defines and grounds our mission statement. "Leading people...By creating irresistible environments where people are encouraged and equipped to Pursue Intimacy with God, Community with Insiders, and Influence with Outsiders. So everything we do should move people in the direction of one of those three vital relationships. That's right Vital Relationships. I think these are so important I am willing to not do anything that doesn't support one of these three areas. That means saying "No" more than saying "Yes" and may even mean "killing" some great programs or things that we have done longer than anybody can remember in order to protect the mission.

I've said before, that these three relationships are the best gauge of spiritual maturity, period. I don't care who you are or how long you've been a Christian, if you can't look at your life and say, "Yep, got something going in all three." Then you are no more spiritually mature than the day you first heard about God and church. Now, before you get all whiney and all of a sudden hear God telling you to go to another church, I want you to think about the difference between knowledge and action.

Instead of wearing your Bible knowledge badge and pointing to your certificates of completion for 18 different Bible studies that you can't really remember anyway, why don't you think about what you have done with that knowledge. May I suggest that we place a little less emphasis on depth of knowledge and a little more on breadth of application. Last time I checked, the Bible makes some pretty clear statements about what it looked like to be a follower of Christ.

He set the standard pretty low. In fact, most of us learned more than we ever needed about spiritual maturity in kindergarten. Yet none of us have it figured out yet. Jesus said things like, "Do for others what you would have them do for you", ever heard of that one? Are you doing it perfectly yet? How about love your neighbor? I'm still working on that one. "Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church" Are you kidding me? How am I supposed to love my wife when I'm married to her? (sarcasm). If I can't get these simple principles down perfectly, do I really need more knowledge about the history of Biblical first century trade routes as they relate to the rise and fall of Rome? I mean come on. Do I have to be the first to admit that its not always easy keeping my mouth shut? Its not natural for me to be nice all the time, I'm not tempted with generosity. There, you know my secret...I'm human, just like you. Now quit trying to be so ridiculously spiritual and religious and join me as we do everything in our power to actually make a difference in our community.

I'm talking real life change. The kind that only happens in the context of relationships. When you are actively pursing an intimate relationship with God, your life will change (intimacy with God). When you have true friends that know you and are there for you and are worshipping and serving with you, your life will change (community with insiders). When you are actively investing your life (because you actually care, not cause they're a project) into those who you know don't agree with your spiritual outlook, your life will change (influence with outsiders). Isn't that what its all about anyway? What's the point of more knowledge if your still stuck at home living in mom's basement?

So let me ask, How are you doing in each of those vital relationships? What are you doing to "Grow"? What does this look like for you?

Harvest Family Camp June 19-21

Although it feels as if Spring is just now getting here, it is time to think about camping! We will be at Hells Gate State Park June 19-21 (Friday-Sunday). The park’s reservation system just opened up today and spots are going fast. If you are interested in joining us for a relaxing and laid back weekend of camping please register right away at http://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/

As of today these are the available sites in the camping loop: 19, 23, 25, 27 (these have sewer/power/water) 8,14,15, 26 have water/electricity only.
